Mission Storm Break

Acrylic on Panel - 9 x 12 inches

Another view of the rainy Mission District in San Francisco, this time, it's starting to clear up, but still very wet. I like rainy days like this, which is good, because we're hurtling toward this kind of weather again.

Atypical Clouds

Acrylic on Panel - 8 x 10 inches

Painting the skies in Northern California can be boring. Either completely blue or completely gray. As fall approaches, things get a little more interesting.

Mother and Child

Acrylic on Panel - 8 x 8 inches

One more go at it. I'm including some steps along the way, not just to show the process, but I met with a painter over the weekend who was filming his painting process and discovered that some of this work seemed better at some stage along the way other than the finished product.

Even the the lighting is wrong in the three photos I took to show the process, I think I prefer the looser brushwork. Hmmm.

Mother and Child

Acrylic on Panel - 8 x 8 inches

First in a series, for a challenge sent by my father. The photo was difficult to work from because it was back lit and most of the faces were in shadow, but a challenge isn't supposed to be easy.

'Brellas

Acrylic on Panel - 5 x 7 inches

For this sketch, I took various elements that I saw from the same vantage point and combined them into a new composition. It was liberating to be able to edit so much out of the scene.

Mother and Child

Acrylic on Panel - 8 x 10 inches

This is a very loose sketch on top of a print as a test. I wish I could paint this way more often. It just flowed out of my brush.

Harding At Night

Acrylic on Panel - 5 x 7 inches

The old Harding Theater, on Divisadero, is a bit of a ghost ship that is in the process of being reborn as something new.

Cupcakes

Acrylic on Panel - 6 x 6 inches

I spied them sitting in the plexiglass case by the coffee counter, and decided to take home an image of them instead of all those calories.

Healdsburg Hills

Acrylic on Panel - 9 x 12 inches

A view of the outskirts of Healdsburg from the top of the hill.

Lemon Ice

Acrylic on Panel - 30 x 30 inches

A mundane little still life had assembled itself in the kitchen sink and dared me to paint it. The lemon looks small because my ice cubes are huge.

Jimtown Store

Acrylic on Panel - 9 x 12 inches

I found a few from last year that I forgot to post, so a little catching up is in order, especially while I'm in a bit of a production slump. Ahem. This is the charming Jimtown Store in Sonoma.

Studio B

Acrylic on Panel - 10 x 8 inches

Another rendering of the artist's studio. A little smaller and more accurate geometry, not that that is important, really.

Studio

Acrylic on Panel - 9 x 12 inches

This is the converted studio of Samantha Buller, where I was lucky enough to attend a workshop recently. You should check out her amazing paintings. Right now she's in the middle of the 60/60/60 challenge. I'll let her explain here.

The Bridge

Acrylic on Panel - 12 x 16 inches

I'm trying to find ways of representing local icons without having them look like our typical tourist imagery. We'll see.

Spring Returns

Acrylic on Panel - 16 x 12 inches

With the scene freshly in mind, I did another version with the knife. These bigger panels take a lot more paint, and I thought a big blade might speed things up. It did, but just a little bit.

Spring Comes to the Vineyard

Acrylic on Panel - 16 x 12 inches

I'd done a small study for this last year, and thought since it Spring again (well here in CA it is) I'd do a larger studio version.

Stow Lake

Acrylic on Panel - 12 x 16 inches

There's a small pagoda on the shore of an island in the middle of a lake in Golden Gate Park. Some say it's haunted. I thought I heard someone call out for help, but I'm pretty sure it was just a goose.

Nude (sketch)

Acrylic on Panel - 8 x 10 inches

Went to a day-long painting class led by Sergio Lopez, at Samantha Buller's studio in Petaluma. I started off with some really awful sketches, but after lunch things started clicking. Sergio is a great teacher and is currently revamping his website, so look for it soon. Looking forward to taking some classes with Samantha herself, soon.
