Not sure what wash you're referring to.
I got some nice Faber-Castell PITT artist pens, that have those soft brush-like points, and come in various colors/shades. I always try to make sure I have one of their lightest grays to do quick initial sketches and then ramp it up with 2 darker values for midtones, and then a black for the deep shadows.

Naturally, as markers, if you go over an area several times with the light ones (or ones that are running low) you can get all sorts of wash and broken tone effects.
